Activities

The main attraction of Long Scraggy Ranch is the 1000s of acres of national forest land that surround the ranch and the multitude of activities the national forest provides.  An endless number of local trails surround Long Scraggy including a hike to the top of Long Scraggy Peak, a hike to a local waterfall, and a short hike to a nearby overlook.  The Colorado Trail passes within about a ½ mile of the property.  Buffalo Creek, located 2 miles away, boasts some of the best mountain biking trails in Colorado.  World-class fishing is available down the road along the South Fork of the South Platte river.

Onsite there is an indoor heated swimming pool, shuffleboard, 18 hole disc golf course, archery range, rifle range, fishing pond, fire pits, playground, and a small challenge course. This is not to mention the personal experience in nature like exploring large rock formations, acres of grassy hills and meadows, woods, stargazing over a campfire, waking early for a sunrise, and watching the evening sunsets.

  • Challenge course There is a small challenge course available for kids.  It includes low level balance beams, a group challenge wall, and swings.   Adult supervision while using these structures is required. For youth groups, appropriate supervision is required at all times.
  • Catch and release fishing is permitted on our pond. Flies and lures only. No wading or swimming is allowed in the pond. All children must have adult supervision. Stay off of ice if it is present.  You will need to provide your own fishing equipment and bait. The pond is stocked with trout.
  • Rifle Range Please let us know if you plan to use the rifle range.  Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  You are responsible to maintain and supply your own equipment.  Rifle Range: Please pick up spent brass and put it in the bucket at range. Clean up any targets (pop cans, etc.) and place them in the trash can. The rifle range is for .22 caliber rifles or smaller. Please obey the allowed times for shooting.  Rifle range hours are 9am to 5pm daily, except on Sunday noon to 5pm. These hours are set by zoning ordinance and MUST be strictly observed.  Guests who desire to use the rifle and archery ranges must provide and assure responsible use of their own rifles, bows and arrows, and targets.
  • Archery Range Please let us know if you plan to use the archery range.  Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  You are responsible to maintain and supply your own equipment.  Guests who desire to use the rifle and archery ranges must provide and assure responsible use of their own rifles, bows and arrows, and targets.

Long Scraggy offers several trailheads that start on our property.

  • Long Scraggy Peak hike begins at the rifle range. This hike is moderate to difficult due to length of hike and elevation change.  Give yourself plenty of time, 3-5 hours roundtrip, depending on the size of your group.  We advise hiking this in the morning to beat the heat of the day.  Hike with plenty of water.
  • The Waterfall hike begins at the stables.  It is a 2-3 hour hike. This easy to moderate hike takes you through lush forest, follows the dry creek bed to the burn area and leads you to granite boulders that drop the creek water down a cascading waterfall of approximately 30 feet of vertical drop.  A perfect picnic area as you overlook Raleigh peak and the creek valley.
  • The Sunset hike begins just above the community fire pit.  Follow the trail north and west to overlook the continental divide.  This 1 hour or less hike provides unobstructed views of Pikes Peak to the south and of our namesake, Long Scraggy Mountain Peak to the southeast.  Mt Evans is visible to the Northwest.  A perfect hike for sunrise and sunset as this is a shorter hike.  This is a mostly easy hike with a short elevation increase.  This hike is great for families with younger children.
  • Molar Rock hike begins at the Long Scraggy Trailhead near the rifle range.  Follow the trail until you cross the small creek.  Venture up the mountain to the North to a balancing rock that we call Molar Rock (because it looks like a tooth molar).  Short and moderately easy for those looking for a hike with a view of the ranch.
