Director’s Report: Overflowing Support. Overflowing Gratitude.

Since May, 2021, Long Scraggy Mountain Ranch has been bustling with activity. Kids, families, friends, using the grounds to find adventure and explore, to relax and restore.

Many of you showed up for our monthly workdays. Over 110 volunteers from supporting churches and the Buffalo Creek/Pine communities have given their time at the 5 work days this summer. They rolled up their sleeves cleaning windows, mowing, painting, repairing plumbing leaks, fixing toilets, mopping floors, raking pine needles, pulling weeds, staining benches in the chapel, cutting trees, making improvements to cabins and the main ranch house. From May – October, volunteers have given over 1000 work hours improving the ranch.

We are thankful that nearly every weekend this summer/fall has been booked with families and groups. Over 100 different families have stayed in Long Scraggy cabins or campsites this summer. Long Scraggy has hosted over 15 large church groups and family reunions such as Calvin Day Camp, Kyle and Laura Cooper’s wedding, the U.S. Navy, Boy Scouts Pack 285, church picnics and worship services, Awana retreats, Young adult retreats, homeschool groups and youth groups. As you plan your next family or church adventure, remember Long Scraggy Mountain Ranch as the perfect place to relax & explore, to rest & restore.

Specific improvements you can find at the Ranch: We have added patio heaters and string lights to the Pavilion area for festive and warm outdoor gatherings. We are happy to announce the addition of queen and double beds in the Pines cabins to better accommodate families. The new Roundhouse deck provides better seating to relax. Visit the Ranch yourself to experience the many other additions to make your stay more comfortable.

As we head into fall, we look back over this summer and our hearts overflow with gratitude for God’s provisions for Long Scraggy, for the opportunity to serve as camp hosts and to see God work in the lives of all the guests at Long Scraggy Mountain Ranch.

Fall 2021 Fundraiser

Long Scraggy Mountain Ranch is looking to our close friends to help us raise $25,000 during our end of year fundraiser.

God has been very faithful to the ranch over the last year. The Long Scraggy Board wants to thank you for your past support. The coronavirus pandemic has changed how we operated this last year as we were not able to schedule any overnight kid’s camps. By God’s blessing, the ranch was booked nearly every weekend with family reunions, church camps, picnics and retreats. Participation in monthly workdays this summer greatly helped to improve the ranch with over 1000 volunteer workhours donated by those who could participate. The spring fundraiser also was a great success and we were able to raise over $35,000. What a tremendous blessing. Thus far, this year’s charitable giving and receipts have covered expenses and also allowed us to invest in some improvements.

As we close out 2021, we would also like to close out our existing loan. We currently owe $25,000. These are the costs left over from the Roundhouse fire and having the camp closed for all of 2020. Your assistance in raising these funds is greatly appreciated to allow the ranch to operate without debt.

If you would like to participate, please send your donation to:

Long Scraggy Mountain Ranch is a 501C3 charitable organization.

We now have the option for online donations and to set up recurring gifts through Tithe.ly. Here’s the link if you would like to contribute. https://tithe.ly/give?c=4591472

The Pines Cabins and Roundhouse remained open this fall but the Pines will be winterized after Thanksgiving. You are still welcome to visit this winter for a day visit on Saturday or Sunday. If you would like to see what the Ranch is like with snow or use the Roundhouse, give us a call. Please contact Jim and Sheri DeHaan, Long Scraggy Ranch hosts, at 303-838-7770 or email reservations@longscraggy.org. The Pines Cabins will open again in mid-March. The camp will be fully open the first weekend in May for the 2022 season. Reservations are already coming in, so don’t delay in booking for next summer. For more information visit longscraggy.org.

Our friends and partners help keep the ranch operating over the years. If you would like more information on how you can get more involved, please contact Jim and Sheri. The ranch is actively looking into how to better work with existing supporting churches, looking to add new church partners and exploring new opportunities to share God’s blessings and serve our community. Your energy, commitment, and service richly bless the ranch.

The Long Scraggy Board has committed to support this fundraiser. Please join us in supporting the ranch,

Long Scraggy Mountain Ranch Board: Dan Zigterman- Chair, Hal Simpson- Secretary, Jon Waanders- Treasurer, Linda Holmes, Ken Zoetewey, Jim and Sheri DeHaan, Eric DeKruif, and Doug De Nooy

Note from the President

Long Scraggy Ranch has indeed been blessed this year. Jim and Sheri have done wonders in both maintenance and improvements. If you have not been up to the Ranch lately, please come up and see it. Many volunteers have helped them catch us up on maintenance as well as many improvements. Many of you have contributed financially. Many of you have done both. The board thanks you for your help and faithfulness. More importantly, we thank God for using you to keep his camp in place. Despite Covid, the camp in getting used again and bookings for next year are increasing.

We are also looking forward to celebrating 50 years of serving God’s children. Next year we plan on having a bit of a golden anniversary celebration. Details to come.

Thank you, Dan Zigterman, President of Long Scraggy Ranch

Treasurer Update

Thank you, donors, for your gracious support! Long Scraggy Ranch has seen some difficult times over the past two years due to Covid-19 health restrictions and the inability to host summer youth camps and other groups. We asked for help and God provided. Over $35,000 was raised by your generous donations which assists in meeting our operational costs and helps to offset the loss of revenue typically generated during normal years. How blessed Long Scraggy’s ministry is by your giving!

Thank You, Jon Waanders, Treasurer of Long Scraggy Ranch

Calvin Camp News

This past year was rough due to covid restriction but the one-day camp held in July was very successful. Kids were able to enjoy many of Long Scraggy Ranch activities including swimming, archers, riflery, crafts, and hiking. We fully anticipate to return back to week-long camps for the summer of 2022. Please reserve these dates for next year:

Calvin camp for campers going into 4th, 5th & 6th grade will be July 11-16, 2022.

Calvin camp for campers going into 7th, 8th & 9th grade will be July 18-23,2022.

We will also be looking at hiring counselors for these weeks. So, if you are in high school or college, please prayerfully consider this opportunity to have a positive impact on these camp kids.

Starting in January the Calvin Camp board will meet to prepare for the 2022 camp. We will be deciding on the theme for camp, Bible curriculum and how to make camp even better for today’s kids.

Our biggest need now if for volunteer to join our board. If you are interested in joining or just checking out the board to see if it is a fit for you, please contact Jenifer McNally at jenifermcnally77@gmail.com

or Linda Holmes at ldyholmes@gmailcom.

We are a small board & could use more members. “Many hands make the load lighter”.
